TAMWORTH PIG KEEPING
IN 1982 I VIC WRIGHT WORKED ON A PIG FARM IN CUMBRIA. THIS WAS AN INTENSIVE FARM WHICH
GOT ME INTERESTED IN PIG KEEPING. IT HAS BEEN A DREAM OF MY WIFE SUZIE AND I TO KEEP PIGS SINCE THEN, AND IN MARCH
2004 WE PURCHASED A SMALL HOLDING WERE WE ARE SETTING UP A FREE RANGE PIG UNIT WITH 2 TAMWORTH GILTS. WE PURCHASED
THE PIGS ON THE 12/02/2007 THIS SITE IS AN ON GOING PROJECT AND IS GOING TO SHOW YOU HOW WE ARE KEEPING OUR PIGS.
BEHAVIOUR
The Tamworth enjoys the attention of humans. They
can be boisterous when young, yet we have
had no trouble keeping them in there pen. They always come running to see us at feed times
and will let you pet them.
This is Sammy petting Sally.
The Tamworth is a great out door pig, its hardiness is
known from the heights of Scotland were it copes with wind and rain in adverse climates,
Just give her a dry bed and she will be happy . The Tamworth makes a good mother to her
young litters. Litters range from 5 up to 11 piglets. Our Tamworth pigs are on open pasture,
but you could keep them in a woodland were they could feed on wind fall. They are also
good rotovaters and can turn over your vegetable plot.
